About Us

In 1975 Kuwait was still a rather young nation, having received its independence only thirteen years prior. The oil industry was booming and the air was rife with possibility. Khalid Al Kharafi saw a valuable opportunity when he observed the high demand for imports to support the growth of Kuwait’s infrastructure. Thus, Khalid and his brothers, Hussein and the late Hamad, established Khalid Ali Al Kharafi & Bros Co. Al Kharafi decided to provide the means to the end – he fabricated steel barges for the Kuwait Port Authority and the Kuwait Shipping Company in 1975, and by 1976 had established a fully equipped steel workshop spanning 5,000 square meters.

Following this project came the next golden opportunity: Khalid Ali Al Kharafi & Bros Co. was awarded the steel fabrication contract for the construction of Kuwait Entertainment City, which took place from 1979 to 1982. This opened doors for the company to work on the modernization of the Mina Ahmadi Oil Refinery in the eighties, and the construction of the Kuwait Oil Company‘s (KOC) projects in the nineties. Throughout this decade, which saw Kuwait reconstruction following the Gulf War, Khalid Ali Al Kharafi & Bros Co. worked on projects such as the As-Zour Desalination Plant (Ministry of Electrical Works) and the Sabiya Power Station, with partners such as Hyundai (South Korea), Mitsubishi (Japan), and US companies such as Bechtel and Braun. Throughout this period, the central partnerships of the company were joint ventures with MCC (China), ACROW (Egypt/ London), and Lamor (Finland).

The company’s portfolio of projects and partnerships kept expanding into the 2000s, with iconic projects such as the Hamra Tower of Kuwait City, the Avenues Mall, Assima Mall and Sheikh Abdulla AlSalem AlSabah Cultural Center.
Kharafi Steel, a group subsidiary, has historically held over 70% of the country’s steel fabrication market share, which has empowered leadership to expand to additional ventures and sectors including environmental initiatives such as the world’s largest soil remediation project.

Kharafi Steel, with its ability to provide clients with durable and quality structures as well as credible and experienced service, opened many other avenues of revenue for the company. Thanks to Khalid Ali Al Kharafi & Bros Co.’s longstanding reputation for dependable steel supply, erection, and building services, the company was able to forge a path as an EPC contractor and full-fledged construction company. Today, the company continues to find new business development opportunities and invests in ways to create sustainable futures for Kuwait and beyond.
